The new Waterways Ireland exhibition space was opened in style on Monday night with over 100 people attending the launch of the Waterways Ireland Erne Waterways exhibition. The exhibition of 40 prints provided by members of the Enniskillen Photographic Society (EPS) conveyed the Erne Waterways system in a variety of guises.
The exhibition was opened by John Martin, Chief Executive of Waterways Ireland, who commented how delighted he was to officially launch the exhibition and commended the club members on the impressive array of prints on display. EPS Chairman, Terry McCartney explained how the club had worked in partnership for a number of months with both Waterways Ireland and the committee of The Enniskillen Arts Festival to bring the exhibition to fruition. |

Terry then introduced Brian McKenna, President of the Northern Ireland Photographic Association and exhibition judge, telling the assembled audience that Brian had ventured into photography by default over 30 years previously when his brother moved to Australia leaving Brian to take up the photographic reigns. Brian talked about the beauty of the Erne which he had been on many times in the past and also commented on the strong field of prints exhibited. Brian then took the time to comment on each of the 40 prints and talked about each one in detail explaining what caught his eye and why. Brian not only explained what he liked he also pointed out where some of the prints could be improved, which it was agreed was very constructive. Brian then picked the top three prints in each section and chose his overall winning print. |

In the novice mono section Neill Gibbons secured third place with Ciara Maguire being awarded second and a delighted Neil Gibbons taking first. The trend continued in the novice colour section with Esther Robinson awarded third place, Neil Gibbons in second and Ciara Maguire obtaining a well deserved first place. In the advanced mono section Brian awarded third place to David Robertson with Darragh Collins delighted to secure second place and Terry McCartney taking first. Terry also featured strongly in the colour section securing both second and third place but was pipped to the post by David Robertson’s sunrise at Crom. A delighted David was subsequently awarded the prize for the overall exhibition winning print. David said he was delighted to secure first place and praised the work of all those involved in the organising and running of the event and even managed to raise three cheers for his closest rival before collecting his prizes. Terry closed proceedings by thanking Waterways Ireland and Enniskillen Arts Festival for their involvement and Brian for his expert and honest opinion. |

RPS Audio Visual Group (Ireland)
Saturday 6 September 2008
Railway Street Presbyterian Church Hall, Lisburn
10.00am – 4.30pm
PROGRAMME
THEME: “GETTING ON TRACK WITH SOUND
NB PLEASE BRING LAPTOPS, WITH SOUND PROGRAMME LOADED, IF POSSIBLE
The aim will be to help prepare ourselves to gain maximum benefit from the visit of Howard Gregory and Suzanne Walker and their special “DAY SCHOOL” on Sound Recording and Sound Production, Saturday 1st November 2008
We hope to distribute preparatory ‘Student Notes’ on Saturday
Our Workshop will fall into four phases:
10.00am For early arrivals, a Q and A session, in which specific questions can be asked on a one-to-one basis of our resident experts – no question too basic. Mainly about Sound, but if necessary also about From Camera to Computer
10.45am (after Registration and Coffee) “Once Upon a Time” - Members’ sequences
(11.30am?) and continuing after lunch: “Hands-on Sound” Small groups, using whatever computers and laptops are available. We will work with both Audacity and CoolEdit (now known as Adobe Audition)
SUMMER PROJECT: A ‘321’ (3 minutes 21 seconds) sequence on ‘One Upon a Time…’
Results to be projected as the first item post-lunch. NB This item was mentioned in the last mailing in July but as we want to get the most out of our sound workshop and depending on how the day goes on Saturday the 321 may be held over for another time?
NB The September issue of PC ANSWERS has a 16-page article with accompanying CD on ‘Audacity’. Get a copy if you can. We will work through this article, and also one in AV News
Audacity can be downloaded free from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (also available on the PC Answers CD)
4.00pm (approx) FUTURE MATTERS – Programme and Meeting-place(s).
We have a very generous offer from Bangor Camera Club to use their premises, with suite of laptops, free of charge. While this would entail most members travelling a longer distance, car parking is convenient and free. Also we could work in a more practical way. What do members think? Or should we contemplate some meetings there, and some in Lisburn, as usual?
And we need to look at the future programme and structure of our Group
NB On Friday evening, 31st October 2008 Howard Gregory and Suzanne are due to give an AV Show and talk at Ards Camera Club in Newtownards at 7.45pm. If anyone wishes to attend they will be more than welcome. Further details on Saturday 6th September.
The following article was taken from RPS AV News August 2008 page 47
Sound Recording and Soundtrack Production Dayschools
Howard Gregory
Following the success of last year’s audio dayschool, we have been asked to repeat it twice. The dates are:
(Saturday 18th October 2008 at Wilmslow Guild [Manchester]) and
SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2008 IN BELFAST (Lisburn?)
Both days will be led by Howard Gregory and Suzanne Walker ARPS and will be revised repeats of last year’s dayschool. They will be structured so that there is something for everyone from complete beginners to more advanced workers. The emphasis will be on understanding principles rather than just “learning what to press when” so that students can apply their knowledge to any software. Students will be shown how to develop a “feel” for what is going on so that problems can be more easily identified and then rectified.
During the day we hope to cover:
- A brief overview of the place of soundtracks in AV and video
- A brief overview of the soundtrack production process
- A basic introduction to digital audio in general so that students understand sampling frequency, bit depth etc, so are able to put sensible figures into dialog boxes when the software asks
- Setting up a computer, soundcard and software to maximise quality and ease of use
- Maximising audio quality on a typical made-down-to-a-price high-street consumer computer
- Choice and use of microphones, with particular emphasis on recording the voice
- Practical demo of voice-over recording; the recording will be incorporated into a soundtrack later in the day
- Recording from sources other than microphones (CD players, portable recorders, camcorders etc.)
- Choice and use of music in soundtracks
- Copyright and licensing issues
- Track-ripping from CDs
- Pulling all the foregoing together by recording, editing and mixing a soundtrack
There is a review of last year’s dayschool on page 19 of AV News Issue 171.
DIRECTIONS to Railway Street Presbyterian Church Halls, Lisburn
From Belfast direction: leave M1at first exit. Drive to town centre, through traffic lights and a roundabout. At roundabout do not go up the hill but swing right and then first left (tall building – new Library will be on your right) Continue to T-junction (at KwikFit and garages). Turn right and follow one-way system (passing Jessops on your right) and take next right at traffic lights. Continue till you see the Railway Station on your left. You swing right into Railway Street and the church is on the right. Take the next right, just past the church, and you may be able to park in the church car part (again on the right). More likely you will have to drive on a short distance to another T-junction. Turn right and use the multi-storey car park on the left.
From South: at new Sprucefield roundabout system follow signs to ‘Lisburn’ and continue to town centre, past hospital on right, till you see the above mentioned KwikFit and garages on your left and continue as above.
From North: continue as directly as you can to town centre, keeping straight on at first main roundabout (Tesco’s is away off to the right) and you will join the one-way system which will swing you left, passing Railway Station as above.

The IPF Audio-Visual group has announced details of AV 2008 the 26th Irish National Audio-Visual Championships which will be hosted by Shannon Camera Club.
The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 18th & 19th October 2008, in The Oak Wood Arms Hotel, Shannon, Co. Clare.
The judge for the competition is Eddie Spence FRPS, who is well known UK and International AV circles as both a judge and a accomplished AV worker. He is a multi award winning author of AV sequences and had worked in analogue and digital aspects of AV. This will be Eddie's first time to judge the IPF AV National Championships, and he will also be showing some of his award winning sequences at the competition.
Thursday the 4th September 2008 marks not only the start of the new season of activities for Enniskillen Photographic Society (EPS) but also the beginning of the clubs 25th anniversary year.
EPS is one of the leading clubs in the North West of Ireland, providing a mixed programme of club and inter-competitions, lectures, workshops and this year not one but two public exhibitions. The exhibitions and programme of events attract prominent judges, lecturers and fellow photographers with a breadth of knowledge and experience from which all members can benefit.
EPS is an amateur club with something to offer everyone regardless of experience, age or photographic ability. It offers a very wide-ranging approach to photographic styles and techniques, and crucially, aims to stimulate and encourage members of all abilities to fulfill their photographic potential, meet other photographers and of course have fun.
The year kicks of with an Open Night for anyone interested in photography to come along and see what typically happens during the meetings. Basic camera controls, Photo manipulation and composing a picture will be given short introductions by more experienced members. Whether you have a disposable, point and shoot or digital SLR you should find something to interest you.
There is a strong bias towards giving all members an opportunity studio skills with a training session on how to set up lights, work with models and ultimately take perfect studio photographs, EPS boasts its own fully equipped studio which is available for use by registered members on a monthly basis. Other training sessions include camera skills and techniques, preparing your prints, PhotoShop skills, interclub nights and many more.
EPS hold monthly Print and Slide competitions for club members with both Novice and Advanced sections in each round. Topics this year include Water, Street Life, autumn and more. Competitions will be judged by both club members and expert judges. At the end of each year cups are presented for the overall winners of the monthly competitions. As a member of the Northern Ireland Photographic Association, Enniskillen Photographic Society enters prints into the NIPA competitions. This year EPS will welcome a number of other local clubs for a “print battle” which sees members from each club pit their prints against each other for the pride of their club.
Enniskillen Photographic Society holds an Annual Exhibition which is open to all club photographers. Cups are awarded in colour and monochrome sections: Portraiture, Pictorial (Open), Theme. Once again there are novice sections – Monochrome and Colour.
A very exciting development for 2008 sees EPS joining forces with the Enniskillen Arts Festival providing an exhibition of prints depicting the Fermanagh Lakeland’s. This very prestigious exhibition will be displayed in the new Waterways Ireland building and will launch the opening of the new Waterways building.
Meetings are held on most Thursday evenings throughout the year at the at 8pm in the Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen. If photography is your passion or if you have always wanted to try your hand at taking great snaps come along to find out more.
So if you are interested in finding out more about Enniskillen Photographic Society or wish to join the club and meet like-minded individuals then please visit www.enniskillenphotosociety.com or contact the club chairman Terry McCartney 028 6632 6633 chair@enniskillenphotosociety.com. Come along to our open evening on Thursday next 4th September 2008 where you will be made welcome.
Once again the time has come when the Merville Newtownabbey Photographic Club prepares for the new photographic season, which will be kicked off with its Annual Exhibition to take place at the foyer of The Mill. In this context I have great pleasure to invite you and your club members to come along to the official opening of this event.
This event has become a popular focal point for the photographic fraternity in the region of East Antrim and beyond at the start of the photographic season. This success is also due to the assistance of Newtownabbey Borough Council, having given the Club the opportunity to show their exhibits in the foyer of the Mill.
Also this year it will be hosted by Newtownabbey Borough Council, and will be officially opened on Thursday, 11 September 2008, commencing at 7:45.
It is anticipated that representatives of the Borough Council,
representatives from photographic circles such as the president of the East
Antrim Photographic Union (EAPU), the Northern Ireland Photographic
Association (NIPA) and the Arts Advisory Committee will be present.
I trust that you will be able to honour us with your presence.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Wolfgang Wenger
Honorary Secretary to the MNPC

There have recently been numerous articles deploring the increasing (and often illegal) attitudes being taken by officialdom, including the police,to photography.
See eg the BBC website article:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7351252.stm
The attitudes can be worse than those we used to ridicule in Russia. There is a Downing street website petition which photographers can sign...(which I have signed) http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/photographylaw/
and there is a document spelling out a photographer's rights in detail at http://www.sirimo.co.uk/ukpr.php

RSS Explained
What is RSS?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are an easy and efficient way to recieve notification when new information is available in a specific area of interest.
How Can I Benefit From RSS?
RSS feeds save time, allowing users to receive notification only when new content is available. Web site visitors choose the information they wish to subscribe to and can unsubscribe from any feed at any point.
How Do I Subscribe to RSS Feeds?
First you will need an RSS feed reader (also called a news aggregator) there are a number of RSS readers available. A short list is available at http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-software.htm
RSS readers are simply programs that display the contents of an RSS feed in an easy to read format.
Once you have an RSS reader you simply click the icon or a link to the RSS feed and paste it into your RSS reader. Some readers will auto detect the presence of an RSS feed on a website and you can optionally choose to subscribe.
Newsgator Online is simple and free to use. All you need to do is to enter the NIPA website URL after selecting the Add Feeds link on the reader.

Sadness and Success
Once more I must begin this notice with the announcement of the deaths of two well-known and valued members of the AV community in Ireland. Last week Sean Mooney took ill suddenly during the night, was admitted to hospital but sadly died. His funeral took place in Dublin last Friday, 12th October. A keen member of our Group and regular participant in our Workshops, he usually had a sequence to submit, whether in response to one of our competitions or just for general critique. The latest of these, on the worked-out Namibian mining town, Kolmanskuppe, co-produced with Michael Doyle, was shown at our last gathering on 15th September. Last weekend it was ‘Commended’ in the Advanced Section of the annual IPF AV Festival in Dublin. We will all miss Sean’s genial personality as well as his productions. His partner Meadhbh O’Leary is assured of the deep sympathy and affection of the RPS AV Group (Ireland)
Earlier, on 21st August, the death took place of Michael Kelly, FIPF, of Galway Camera Club and the IPF National Audio-Visual Group. Producer of many outstanding sequences, he was a frequent prize-winner of the IPF competition. While I don’t have the details to hand, on at least one occasion his sequence won the annual IPF/NIPA battle.. The IPF Festival Programme carried the following tribute:
‘Michael was a gentleman and a great promoter, especially west of the River Shannon, of audio visual. He willingly gave of his time and experience to everyone. He was a mater of the craft of audio visual; and his stunning landscape images captured the light of the west of Ireland together with very slow dissolving images to very appropriate music let him produce wonderful “third images” to which we all aspire”. Some years ago, I had the privilege of judging the IPF competition, held that year in Mallow, and I had great difficulty separating first and second, in the end awarding first place to John Hooton, another master of landscape/seascape and spectacular dissolves. Again, we extend our sympathy to Michael’s wife and family
But now to happier things—a notable success!
For the first time, and to mark their 25th anniversary, the IPF Festival added an International section. The twenty-one entries included some top names – Enrico Bernasconi of Italy, Malcolm Imhoff, England and Chair of the Jury at last month’s UK National AV Festival in Leicester, and Robert Albright, Chair of the RPS Distinctions Panel. The top award went to Peter Coles for The Way Forward, an imaginative interpretation of ‘Alice’, blending complex images with superb sound. Second was A Point of View – dramatic images of the worst aspects of the Northern Ireland Troubles by press photographer Brendan Murphy made into an AV sequence by Mike Kersting (UK), while third went to Ron Davies’ The Exiled Mind – his moving and beautifully photographed sequence on his nostalgia for his native Wales. Then came our own Raymond Hughes with his NIPA 2007 winning production on St Patrick, The Least of the Faithful. This receivedthe award of ‘Very Highly Commended’, the Judge being none other than Colin Balls. Those who know Colin are aware that he does not hand out such accolades lightly. To Raymond: hearty congratulations!
