NIPA Competition – Rules

INTER-CLUB MONOCHROME PRINT, COLOUR PRINT AND COLOUR TRANSPARENCY COMPETITIONS

1.

There will be three competitions, one for monochrome prints, one for colour prints and one for colour transparencies.

The competitions will each incorporate a Principal section and a Beginners section.

The definition of a Beginner is provided at the end of these rules.

There will be five rounds in each competition.

In the first four rounds of the competitions a club may submit up to 4 prints or colour transparencies, any number of which may be by beginners, but not more than 3 of which may be by advanced photographers.

In the fifth round of the competitions, each club may enter prints up to 20” x 16” mount size. Each club may enter four monochrome prints, four colour prints and four slides. One of the entries in these sections must be by beginners.

To be eligible for participation in the Beginners section, at least one print or colour transparency in the competition concerned must be by a Beginner.

4. In each round, the top 6 (approximately) placed prints and colour transparencies will each be awarded "Stars".
5. All trophies will be held from the date of the presentation until their return is requested by Council.
6. Entries, plus relevant entry forms must be brought, or forwarded to the appropriate Council meeting, as notified annually in the NIPA competition timetable. Each entry, with it's entry form must be packed separately and appropriately labelled.
7. In the first four rounds, prints may be any size up to 16" x 12" and must be on mounts which may be any colour and any size up to 16" x 12".
In the fifth round, prints may be up to 20” x 16” mount size.
8. Colour transparencies must be in 5cm square mounts.

Each print must show on the back of the mount :

Reference letter on NIPA entry forms as follows :
1st  print  Ref A
2nd print Ref B
3rd print   Ref C
4th print  Ref  N  (must be a Beginners print)
If any of the prints A to C are by Beginners this should be indicated by the suffix N, e.g. B(N)

Each Colour Transparency must show on the mount :

(a)
Name of Club
(b)
Author's Name
(c)
Title of Colour Transparency
(d)
Reference letter on NIPA entry forms, as under 9 (f) above.
(e)
Spot, in bottom left-hand corner when directly viewed.
 In all cases  transparencies will be projected as spotted.

 

11. All starred prints will be retained by NIPA to form a portfolio which will be available on loan to member clubs.
12. Non-starred prints will be available for collection at the Council meeting following the round for which they were entered. Entries cannot be returned at Inter-Club evenings. Clubs are asked to ensure that packing of entries is adequate. A signature to verify receipt of returned entries may be required upon collection.
13. No Monochrome print, Colour print or Colour transparency may be entered which is essentially the same, or so similar as to be essentially the same, as a previous entry in the relevant section.
14. Unless the author states otherwise in writing to the Inter-Club Competition Secretary, it will be assumed that any print or colour transparency entered may be used for publicity purposes to promote NIPA.

Submission of an entry indicates acceptance of these rules.

16.

A further event will be held to decide the individual ‘Top Print(s)’ and the individual ‘Top Slide. This event will consist solely of the starred prints and slides selected from the previous four rounds.

A BEGINNER is a photographer who has NOT in any preceding year :

(a)
Had a photograph awarded a star in the relevant section of the NIPA Inter-Club competitions.
(b)
Been placed first in any section of the Annual NIPA Beginners Competitions.
(c)

Been awarded recognised photographic honours, or a recognised academic qualification in photography.

(d)

Achieved success in any open exhibition or competition organised by a recognised photographic society, association, organisation or PAGB exhibition.

Success (d) is defined as acceptance in a selected exhibition, or award in a non-selected exhibition or competition.

(e)

Produced work which is obviously of an advanced standard.

The NIPA Inter-Club Competition Organisers reserve the right to review the status of any entrant.

MONOCHROME prints:

1.
All black and white and monochrome images are included.
2
A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of a single tone to the entire image is defined as a monochrome print.

COLOUR prints:

1.
All images, other than those defined above are defined as colour images.
2.
A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of  partial toning, or by the addition of one colour to any part of the imageis defined as a colour print.
